A downloadable Boardgame

Description

You and your friends(or enemies) have been cast down into the rich history of Earth, finding yourself in the stone age. Can you advance through the evolution of human advancements and come out on top in your Age-spanning "rivalry" with the other immortals/players.

-

In response to our one word brief of "Journey" our team of designers worked together on the idea of travelling through the multiple different ages that make up Human history. As immortals born in the stone age you as the players will learn to progress through the different styles of cards and environments in each era.

-

Each era part of the board has a different background style to emphasise their individuality while also highlighting the change of decks so that the players are always aware of what cards they should be using.

Basic Overview

The game is split into five sections of a board, with 3 sections on one side and 2 on the other. Each section is made to represent the different major ages of humanity and your Journey through them: Stone age, medieval era, industrial era, modern era and future era. The goal of the player is to start in the stone age and journey to the end of the future age with the most assets(in this scenario, cards and gold).

Each age is in itself its own board, with benefits to reaching the ends however all players much reach the end to progress to the next "era".

The player moves along a path that is split into tiles and there are multiple routes from start to finish of an age. The players should move with the rolling of a dice. Players will be able to gain and lose gold by landing on select special tiles, they can also gain buildings and properties that correlate with the age they are playing in.

-

These are examples of what the back and front of the cards would be like for one of the 'ages'(sections of the board), this one being a farm from the stone age with a stone age backing.

As the ages advance so too do the card backs, ensuring the users are always aware of the different kinds of decks.

Proof of concept for the different age backings :

We also considered the sue of multiple different ways to measure how much money you have in your hand.

We first considered the use of counters because of their simplicity. However we quickly realised that small pieces such as counters can be lost and misplaced easily. So we also considered the use of a life counter and ruler measuring system as shown below.

-

To incite a increased amount of tension within the game we also implemented the ability to go to war with your fellow players if you land on the same space as them.

This then allows for a greater flow of currency around the players ensuring that anyone person can steal and sabotage another player.

To further add to this tension we also added a timer(correlating with the game genre) so that when a player reaches the end of an age of history a 5 minute countdown starts. This with added incentives of getting gold for being first, forces players to always stay on their toes, ready to rush to the end. These five minutes would be timed down with a sand timer, linking further to the genre of time.

Proof of concept for the map was completed on paper and then we moved onto a card-board version for further stability and playability.
